How to drive a 125cc e-scooter with a car license – all information about B196
Do you want to ride a powerful electric scooter or e-chopper but only have a Class B driver's license? Then there's good news: With the B196 extension, you can legally ride a 125cc model in Germany – without any additional testing.
What is B196 and what does it mean for you?
Since 2020, the B196 extension allows you to drive light motorcycles up to 125 cm³ or 11 kW with your car driving license (class B) – including many of our e-scooters and e-choppers with speeds of up to 125 km/h.
The highlight: No theoretical or practical test is required. Instead, you simply need to complete a compact training course at a certified driving school. Afterward, the key number B196 will be entered on your driver's license.
Requirements for the B196 extension
Before you start, you must fulfill the following points:
-
You are at least 25 years old
-
You have held a Class B driving licence for at least 5 years
-
You take part in a driving course (without exam)
The extension only applies in Germany – so there is no EU-wide recognition.
This is how the training works
The training consists of:
-
4 x 90 minutes theory
-
5 x 90 minutes practice
After completing the course, you'll receive a certificate that you can use to apply to your local driver's license office for the registration of the key number B196. This officially entitles you to ride 125cc scooters.
